Expertise redefined and its potential opportunities

Some people may think you have to be a doctor or a scientist to be an expert. Traditionally, experts were ones who were qualified either by a judicial body or holding some qualification such as a PhD. I’m here to tell you that you’re an expert even if you’re not holding a PhD or any formal education.

Why you’re an expert

You know something that others don’t. That’s it really. Let me offer a formal definition of how I interpret expertise:

Expertise: two or more spheres that come together to form a combination where you know more than someone else and can convincingly prove it.

The key: you should have the capacity to convince that person why you know it and nobody else does. If you can do that, then you’re an expert. It’s really that simple.

Now, you have to make sure that only you know it by combining one or two worlds together, so let’s take marketing with being a runner. You can marry the two areas and find something that only you know. It may be difficult but it comes down to convincing someone else that you know more than them in that area.

How to use your expertise

We are in the gig economy. We are seeing a number of contractors surfacing. It’s the trend that will continue. Now, if you choose to jump on board, then here’s how you can do it:

Your expertise gives you a door into the freelancing world.

You can use your expertise in a niche market fit that can generate you business. Of course, you need to be selective and find that niche. You need to create a brand story and convince your target audience that you know more than them. However, I think that goes for any business, so nothing out of the ordinary there.

On the other hand, you could start up an agency or some other venture too, or design an app! The possibilities are endless.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a new opportunity now is a great time to do it.

Everyone is an expert in something. You can leverage your expertise for a business. You can take part in the gig economy and figure out how you wish to conduct business.

Of course, take into consideration that freelancing may bring additional stress and other considerations. Before pursuing a freelance business, conduct the necessary research and understand your requirements.

Key Takeaway: Contracting and freelance work is an upcoming trend. To be a successful freelancer, you need to be an expert. Expertise can be defined as the mix of two or spheres that are unique and where you can convince someone that you know it better than they do. Of course, any business venture has inherent risks, so always do your research before hand.
